Philips HQ6990 6900 Series Electric Shaver

Review by

Today, were going to take a look at the Philips HQ6990 6900 Series Electric Shaver shaver. Now, we’ve been very impressed with some of Philips’ electric shavers here at Best Electric Shaver Reviews, but the really good ones are in the higher price brackets. So which shaver do you need to look at if you’re not wanting to break the bank to get a decent shave? If you’re interested in any of the gimmicks, bells or whistles of the higher-end electric shavers, then you might want to take a look at the Philips HQ6990. Let’s dive in and find out what it’s all about.

One of the first things that caught our eye about the Philips HQ6990 is that it includes Philips Super Lift and Cut technology. This is the same great cutting technology that Philips include in their more expensive shavers. It is a dual blade system; the first blade lifts the hair away from your skin gently, and the second blade cuts it so that the hair is getting trimmed as close to the skin as possible. This is a selling point of their more expensive shavers, so Philips have been very generous to include this technology in the HQ6990.

The three shaver heads on the Philips HQ6990 combine slots for drawing in long flat lying hairs, and micro holes which capture the shorter stubble that might otherwise be missed. All three shaver heads are mounted using Philips Reflex Action system. This means that the shaver heads move and adjust to the shape of your face and neck, following the contours of the skin. This means that less friction is created, and ultimately less friction means less skin irritation.

We’ll see what customers have to say about the cutting ability of the Philips HQ6990 and how gentle it is on the skin later.

The Philips HQ6990 provides 30 minutes of shaving time on a full battery charge, and it takes just 1 hour to reach a full charge. This quick charging is a welcome feature on most Philips shavers, and again is something that is often found in the more high end shavers on the market; another generous addition to the HQ6990.

The Philips HQ6990 is ergonomically designed for ease and comfort of use, and comes with a pop-up trimmer for use with sideburns or moustache hair.

We found most electric shavers were cheapest at Amazon.co.uk, including the Philips HQ6990 which is currently available for 20% off at the time of writing.

Philips HQ6990 6900 Series Customer Reviews and Feedback

The Philips HQ6990 is quite the best seller, and as such there is a huge amount of customer reviews, feedback and opinions to sift through. Having done so, it becomes clear that customer satisfaction is very high with this shaver. In fact, over 93% of customers gave it a glowing 4 or 5 star review. So what exactly did they like about it, and are there any bad points to be aware of?

First, almost every review of the Philips HQ6990 (even from the few people who didn’t like the shaver) praised it’s battery life, and particularly liked how quickly it could be given a full charge. On average, it was reported that it took around an hour to charge fully, and could be expected to last for around 10 days on that single charge. We’ve found that this is generally a much appreciated feature in Philips’ shavers, so we’re not surprised to find that customers really appreciate it.

People also were quite impressed with the quietness of the Philips HQ6990, finding it to be very quiet in operation. In these days of portable mp3 players, people do like to listen to music or the radio in the bathroom, and the HQ6990 doesn’t overbear with it’s noise.

The vast majority of reviews also mentioned that they were very happy with the shaving results of the Philips HQ6990; it was generally agreed upon that the shaver gave a very good shave for the cost, and represented good value for money when compared with more expensive shavers.

That brings me onto the value for money side of things. The Philips HQ6990 was really a hit in this regard. While it was acknowledged that this might not be the most feature packed shaver on the market, people were more than happy to live without more advanced features as it was available for such a low price. In fact, the HQ6990 is available for 47% off at the time of writing, which makes it one of the cheapest shavers on the market, and a proposition well worth look at.

“I’m 57. Why has it taken me four decades to discover the superiority of Philips’ shavers? With a really light touch this gives a result virtually as good as the BIC. Highly recommended” Click here to read full review

Out of the hundreds of customer reviews and testimonials of the Philips HQ6990, there were only a small handful of negative comments. One of the most common that we noticed, was that Philips have not included a bag or carry case with the shaver. While this may be a good idea if you travel, considering the cheap price of the shaver we don’t think that it’s a major omission, especially considering you can pick up a carry case for below £5.

Before we close, there is just one more point to mention. 93% of people found the Philips HQ6990 to give a good, close shave and were particularly happy considering the price. There were a small minority of men with especially thick and coarse stubble hair that found that it didn’t do a good job for that. For that reason, if you are a man with particularly heavy or coarse stubble, you should probably avoid the HQ6990 and opt for something a bit more powerful, such as the Philips RQ1180 SensoTouch 2D. That said, the HQ6990 seems to be a good performer for the vast majority of men.

In conclusion, we’ve been quite impressed with the Philips HQ6990. It’s a simple, cheap, but effective shaver which should prove to be a good purchase for anybody who wants a decent shaver that won’t break the bank. We’re giving this one 3 stars for it’s shaver prowess and value for money, but it loses a couple of marks for it’s lack of more advanced features (if it’s a bit basic for you then you should take a look at the Philips HQ7390). If you’re looking for an easy, straight-forward shaver without a lot of gimmicks, that the HQ6990 could well be the shaver for you. Middle of the road, 3 stars.
