Philips QC5170 Mains Rechargeable Hair Clippers Review

Philips QC5170 Rechargeable Hair Clippers

If you like to shave your head, it can be a bit annoying to hand over hard earned cash to a hairdresser (it’s not exactly a difficult job); this is where the Philips QC5170 Rechargeable HairClipper can help. The QC5170 is a hair clipper from Philips with a rotating head, which Philips say can help you to cut your own hair and reach those hard to reach areas without anyone’s help. That means you can save yourself a bit of money and shave your hair yourself, instead of paying the hairdresser to do it. But is the QC5170 any good? First, we’ll take a look at what the package has to offer, and then see what the customers have been saying about these hair clippers.

Philips QC5170 Mains Rechargeable Hair ClippersAs I mentioned, the unique thing about the Philips QC5170 is the patented rotating head. This means that the head rotates 180 degrees, so that it is at a right angle from the handle. This allows for comfortable operation, and makes it much easier to shave hard to reach places like the back of your head, completely on your own. In fact, the QC5170 has been designed from the ground up by Philips, with the goal of making it easier to cut your own hair.

The other unique feature of the Philips QC5170 hair clippers is the contour following comb. This means that the comb which guides your hair into the clipper can swivel as you run it over your head, and therefore adjusts to the shape of your head. This means the QC5170 will give you a smooth and even shave, according to Philips.

The blades of the Philips QC5170 are self-sharpening, so there is no need to ever replace them. Additionally, there are constructed from stainless-steel which means that they don’t require any lubrication or oiling whatsoever, unlike other hair clippers which require regular maintenance.

The Philips QC5170 hair clippers will operate on or off the mains, as it has a rechargeable battery. On a single charge, the battery will give you 100 minutes of shaving time. This makes the QC5170 very handy for travelers, although if you only intend to use it at home then it can be operated on the mains if you wish.

There are two adustable length combs included in the package with the Philips QC5170. It also comes with a precision trimmer for shaping the hairline as you wish.

We found that most electric shavers and trimmers were cheapest at Amazon.co.uk, including the Philips QC5170 which is currently available for a huge 61% discount.

Philips QC5170 Hair Clippers Customer Feedback and Opinions

The first thing that is apparent about the Philips QC5170 is that these hair clippers have literally flown off the shelves. They’re quite a big best seller, so Philips must be doing something right. At first glance, the customer feedback and opinions also reflect this. Over 91% off of all customers gave the QC5170 hair clipper a positive review. So these initial key indicators are looking good, let’s take a look at what the customers have been saying and see what they think about the QC5170 clippers.

The two things that really stuck out in the customer opinions were that the vast majority of customers were very happy with the shaving results, and the battery life of the Philips QC5170.

Quite a lot of customers who purchased the Philips QC5170 were looking to save some money and time by cutting their hair themselves instead of visiting the hairdresser. I can report that the majority of them were very happy with the results, saying that the QC5170 gave an even trim across the entire head. Many people mentioned the smoothness of the clippers too, pointing out that they was no snagging or pull experienced. Overall, these clippers are very good at shaving the head.

“These are more or less idiot proof. Just start on a long setting and go down through the grades until you hit the right one. (It’s worth adding that my wife didn’t spot that I’d not gone to the barber.)” Click here to read full review

As to the battery life, some people were reporting that it lasted even longer than the advertised 100 minutes; around about 2 hours. Given it too people between 10-15 minutes to shave their head using the Philips QC5170, the battery will last for 6-8 shaves before requiring another charge. The battery definitely provides the performance you would need if you intend to take it with you when you travel, especially is you like to keep your hair short and need to use it frequently. The long battery life also offers an advantage to those who want to use it at home; you won’t get caught without a shave if you forget to charge it. Regardless, you can run the QC5170 clippers off the mains if the battery does run out.

Reaction to the rotating head was somewhat 50/50. Some people really liked it and found that it helped them to shave the back of their head much more easily, and some people said they didn’t think it helped. Either way, though, these hair clippers should suit you; if you don’t like the 180 degree rotation, you can use it in the standard position used by most  sets of clippers.

There were very few negative reviews of the Philips QC5170. However, there was a few minor negative points that were brought up. First, the numbering system used on the combs does not correlate with the numbering system that you may be used to at the barbers. Unfortunately, several customers had rushed into using the clippers without reading the instructions, and ended up with hair much shorter than they bargained for! So please be aware, you should read the instructions to understand just how the numbering system works before using the QC5170! While this is only a minor point (which Philips clearly point out in both the instructions and on the box), it did catch out a couple of customers so we thought it worth mentioning. We don’t think this is a reflection on the quality of the Philips QC5170 clippers.

Another minor complaint with the Philips QC5170 was that there is no battery charging indicator to show when the battery has been fully charged. While we agree that this would be very handy, the instructions clearly advise how long the QC5170 clippers should be charged for, and at this bargain price something had to be sacrificed!

In all, we’ve been impressed with the Philips QC510 hair clippers. They’re simple, cheap, provide a good even shave, and have the option of using the rotating head for those people who find that more comfortable. With the precision trimmer thrown in too, this is a good value package for anyone who’s looking to save the money and time that they spend at the hairdresser or barbers. They also happen to beat the spots off of the competition such as the Remington HC365. A very good hair clipper – 4 stars.
